1990 Donruss Red/Red Test Cards

While searching eBay, I found a whole slew of 1990 Donruss Blue/White Test cards as well as 1990 Donruss Aqueous cards.  However, I also found a new test card that is a hybrid of both the Blue/White and Aqueous cards.  These cards are currently not cataloged anywhere and feature a glossy red front and a non-glossy red back.  This is similar to the Aqueous cards in that the front is red and glossy, but they are also similar to the Blue/White cards since they feature a player on both sides with one side glossy and the other side non-glossy.  I have cataloged all the cards I could find on eBay in this checklist.  These test cards appear to cover roughly #350-400 in the set.

Here is an example:

1985 Wichita Eagle-Beacon Card Checklist Part #7

1976 Linnett Superstars-Perforated #98
Dave Concepcion
A mistake was made on my last request for microfilm, so I only have 2 updates this week.  The best player in this update is probably Dave Concepcion.  One interesting note is someone tried to use an 1986 Topps Alan Knicely card to trade up to a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle.  You can read the story about that here.  He failed in that quest.  This is the last update to the checklist.  It is complete now!

This update contains a few Hall-of-Fame players: Charles Barkley (Basketball HOF 2006), Kevin McHale (Basketball HOF 1999), Robert Parish (Basketball HOF 2003), and Cal Ripken, Jr. (Baseball HOF 2007).  The Charles Barkley pre-dates his 1986 Fleer rookie card by one year.  It also contained well-known professional basketball players Danny Ainge and Maurice Cheeks. It will only be a few months until this list is complete.

1985 Wichita Eagle-Beacon Card Checklist Part #3

Today's update has the first old-time players in it.  We have Hall-of-Fame players Rube Marquard, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson in this entry to the Wichita Eagle-Beacon set.  I've listed a Christy Mathewson from the popular T206 White Border set as an example.  The set ends in 1985, so I would expect within the next few months, I will have a complete checklist for 1983-85.

1985 Wichita Eagle-Beacon Card Checklist Part #2

I am in the final stretch of being done with cataloging the Wichita Eagle-Beacon cards. The series ends sometime in 1985.  Today's update includes some Hall of Fame baseball and football icons: Carl Eller (Football HOF 2004), Catfish Hunter (Baseball HOF 1987), Al Kaline (Baseball HOF 1980), Willie Lanier (Football HOF 1986), John Madden (Football HOF 2006), and Stan Musial (Baseball HOF 1969).  John Madden is actually more widely known as a color commentator and video game franchise than he is for the coaching he did at the Oakland Raiders.

Here is the first installment for the 1985 Wichita Eagle-Beacon series.  There were basketball, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and volleyball players in this update.  A little something for everybody.  The Wichita Eagle-Beacon is anything but boring.  There were four players in the Hall of Fame: Seve Ballesteros (Golf HOF 1999), Fred Biletnikoff (Football HOF 1988), Buck Buchanan (Football HOF 1990), and Ivan Lendl (Tennis HOF 2001).

The final post for the 1984 set is here!  This post doesn't have any professional athletes from baseball, basketball, football, or hockey.  Instead we have professional tennis players, Olympic athletes, and college basketball players.  All of the tennis players are in the International Tennis Hall of Fame: Jimmy Conners (HOF 1998), John McEnroe (HOF 1999), and Guillermo Vilas (HOF 1991).

1984 Wichita Eagle-Beacon Card Checklist Part #11

I'm nearing the end of the 1984 Wichita Eagle-Beacon set. I have just 2 more microfilm strips to look at and I should have those in the next 2 weeks. Today's update had stars from all kinds of sports: baseball, basketball, football, golf, hockey, and soccer. I got my next set of microfilm in lightning speed this time around. There was pretty much nothing of interest in this update with the exception of Hockey Hall of Fame player Mike Bossy (Hockey HOF 1991) and Lance Parrish from the Detroit Tigers.  Overall, there were a number of unknown players, coaches, and college sports in this update.

1984 Wichita Eagle-Beacon Card Checklist Part #8

This update includes 2 notable U.S. Olympic Team athletes: Carl Lewis and Mary Lou Retton. This is likely one of Mary Lou Retton's earliest known "cards". There were 2 Baseball Hall of Fame players: Gary Carter (Baseball HOF 2003) and Dennis Eckersley (Baseball HOF 2004). There were several other notable baseball players too: Kirk Gibson, Keith Hernandez, and Kent Hrbek. I've included a picture of Kirk Gibson's Topps rookie card that recently sold for over $2,000 on eBay.

1990 Donruss Blue / White Test Issue Variation

I've always wondered if a particular card in the 1990 Donruss Blue / White Test Issue could be found in both blue and white versions.  It never really mentioned in the SCD if they could be found both ways.  I no longer need to wonder.  On eBay this week someone listed Alan Trammell / Mike Stanley and Carl Yastrzemski / Willie McGee cards where each player has blue and white versions.  Currently, I've only found the Cal Ripken, Jr. card in a white version.  See the images below:

Here is a the latest update to the 1984 Wichita Eagle-Beacon checklist.  The highlights include Eric Davis on the Wichita Aeros, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Basketball HOF 1995), and Tom Kite (Golf HOF 2004).  I also uncovered the strangest names yet with the soccer players Zeee Kapka and Tasso Koutsoukos.

1997 Score Board Talk N' Sports Phone Cards $1000 Samples

1997 Score Board Talk N' Sports Phone Cards $1000 Samples
#1 Cal Ripken, Jr. [FRONT]
For some time I have been looking for a Cal Ripken, Jr. 1997 Score Board Talk N' Sports $1000 Phone Card and have never even seen one. According to the Beckett annual guide there were only 10 serial numbered cards produced. Just a few days ago, I found a copy on eBay for $8.99 plus shipping and was ecstatic! Surely this could not be what I had been looking for all these years at that price. It wasn't. However, it was something I had never seen before either. It was an unnumbered sample card. I have no idea how many of these samples are actually out there and they are not in any guide. Instead of a serial number and phone number to call to use the phone card, it had the word "SAMPLE" printed on the back. I have verified 3 of the 5 cards in the set exist. I think the full checklist is as follows and is the same as the regular $1000 phone card set:

#1 Cal Ripken, Jr. [BACK]
  1. Cal Ripken, Jr.
  2. Scottie Pippen
  3. Brett Favre
  4. Allen Iverson
  5. Eddie George
I've noticed a number of these phone cards without serial numbers and other information missing on the backs on eBay over the past few months.
